That merely sets the tone. Maybe it's the blood and crime that pulsates in Daniel Cooney's spare, character-driven prose . . . He's been writing about this character since 1997. Could it be the femme fatale with long legs and porcelain skin on the cover . . . Maybe my praise here is biassed because I've been reading the Valentine comics for almost a decade now . . . No. That's not it. Prelude To A Kill can be enjoyed without ever having read the comics. The cerebral narrative starts years before Dana Vasquez is rooted in the life of a contract killer. The `prelude' in the title doesn't stop there though. The first two professional hits of Dana's career take her to exotic locales that require a lot of strategic planning (weapons and tactics) and research (speaking a foreign language more acceptable to blend into the region) to carry out. And the author gives you just enough details to not only make you want to vacation there, you'll believe you're participating as her spotter too. The last attribute in Prelude To A Kill that Daniel Cooney weaves into Dana's psyche is love. Love of money (obviously, she kills for it). Love for country. Most important, love of family. But not in a fashion that'll leave a syrupy, schmaltzy aftertaste in your mouth. Ultimately, Prelude To A Kill succeeds as a noir because it utilizes plot devices of that genre. In this case, the anti-hero left to rot in a correctional facility for standing up for herself gets sprung, accepts her destiny, soars like an eagle as an assassin, and confronts her fate. And just when you think that surrendering to her heart is going to sacrifice her values or her life, Dana's specialized trade craft takes over her instinct. One of the strongest themes of noir, which this thriller emphasizes in spades, is a hard-wired factor of the human experience: Self-preservation. Stories about that are never dull and last in the imagination forever.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.GrippingBy CustomerValentine Prelude to a Kill by Daniel Cooney takes the reader on a gripping journey of a young girl's desperate life after her release from jail. Sprung early from jail for reasons she doesn't understand, Dana, or Valentine as she is sometimes called, learns all too soon that she has been selected to join a secret underground agency of assassins. Her choice is simple: join the group and continue a life of crime or go to prison for another murder charge. Throughout the novel, Dana battles with her inner feelings of the morality of the jobs she does, loss of a loved one, the uncertainty of her mother's whereabouts, and her feelings about her father. Dana must put everything together and use her intelligence to survive a job that is kill or be killed. I found myself turning the pages to see what happens next.
