I found any five-minute interval I could to read this amazing work, which combines the history of the Scotch-Irish in Appalachia, the economic and social realities of life on the "old frontier" before the American Revolutionary War, and the circumstances of an extraordinary man whose legacy sheds a new light on the things we consider "American" to this day.The most poignant character contrast comes when Gilbert introduces and details the interactions of Walker with "The Pathfinder" John C. Fremont. Fremont (or the stories Fremont tells about himself) characterizes what we typically think of when we think of the old West: running roughshod over unseen lands, standing nobly atop high peaks and declaring the glory of the Republic and Manifest Destiny, interspersed with violent intentions for the native peoples. He was (mostly) the total opposite of Walker, who held a deep fascination with exploring but not "civilizing" new lands and had a real respect and camaraderie with Native Americans. He was generally kind to those he guided, favored an overriding commitment to diplomacy over guns, and made it a point to not tell tall tales about himself. This book, though a historical work, makes me ponder the kinds of imagery and justifications our leaders today take when they authorize gunship diplomacy, unilateral intervention and a conflict-based "survival of the fittest" mantra. What Gilbert makes clear through Walker's pioneering and leading of the westering movement is that violence did not win the West. Of course, neither was the process completed via some kind of idealistic peace-waging with the natives. But Walker was a man the likes of which we miss in our characters today; a respectful, understanding, and eager explorer, not a conqueror.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.a joy to readBy mikey d.I came across this book by accident in the 1900s and it has been on my top ten books to read since then, for the sake of the pleasure of reading this fantastic word-painting about the life of an intelligent home grown exporer. In June 2013 I read it for the 4th time in an original condition hardback. There's a great deal of humor in the writing of this complex story, weaving so many different lives together and Bil's work is a model for historical writers of any age. This book is a work of art in that it so accurately portrays the early 1880s times on the frontier so well for us too-comfortable moderns. But all the lessons here are about basic humanity, regardless of which decade we happen to be living in.I really enjoyed his weaving of his own sense of humanity and humor into this worthy tale about an important historical American. The idea that he was not interviewed more and did not allow the legends to create a media borne celebrity in the California papers is honorable.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Genealogist dream; History lovers adventureBy K. BennerBeing a genealogist this helps a person get in the mindset of their ancestors and to understand what and where these ancestors were and what their lives were like; especially if you can't find the information you need.Sometimes it is essential to your understanding of what and how your family got to where they are; and it makes one think as to where ones own family will be after one pass on. The frontier is an enigma. Not enough is written about the man on a quest to discover new areas and how he dealt with what he found and survived. What the explorer faced and how he made a place in that world. This was great for understanding history; where and how things happened. It was an adventure and helped me understand where to look for information in putting my frontiersmen and women in perspective.See all 28 customer reviews...
