I really had no idea that running a marathon was even on the list. At 55 years of age and 60 pounds overweight, perhaps this idea was lunacy. In any event, I bought some running shoes, dieted a bit and found a training program. As any sane person might imagine, I discovered some things.1. Running was hard.2. Running wasn't fun.3. You can hurt yourself plodding down the road as an overweight, out of shape, "older" person.In fact, I did ultimately hurt my left knee. I decided to take break and let things heal up. While on the break, I decided to check another item off my bucket list. I learned to surf on the North Shore on Oahu. What a trip that was. I also discovered Jeff Galloway's web site. After much thought and reading, I decided to purchase this book, along with the Gymboss interval timer and give Jeff Galloway's program a shot.I must say, I have been happy with the run/walk/run method. Of course, I had to get over the mental aspect of walking when I was supposed to be running. However, I found that I actually was completing my runs in a faster time (Jeff notes this in this book) and I am injury free! I am following one of the several training programs he includes in the book. I have signed up for my first marathon (Honolulu 2014 in December) and am now really enjoying the training. So here is what I have now found using the Jeff Galloway method.1. Running is hard but easier when you take a more sane approach (e.g. run/walk/run).2. Running is fun and you feel better after running.3. You can run as an overweight, out of shape, "older" person and not hurt yourself.I know this may sound crazy, but give it a shot. It's the perfect example of "don't judge a book by it's (very ugly and dated looking) cover. It's chock full of really great practical tips - even if you don't follow Galloway's Run-Walk-Run method.I ran my first Marathon last Saturday after following the advice in this book and posted a 3:51. LawsonAs with all things physical, you should adhere to the advice of medical professional first and foremost.My first half marathon I thought I would practice up to 10 miles, and then wing it for the rest. I finished almost 8 minutes slower than my goal and with cramps and a lot of fatigue.So for my next half, I thought I should train properly, and stumbled across a book by Jeff Galloway. I used his method and training, and beat my goal time by 3 minutes while feeling great! So, the next year when I wanted to run my first full marathon, I sought out this book and once again, beat my goal by 4 minutes and felt great (relatively).I’m a relative armature runner who got into running out of needs to change poor health habits, my first 5k ever was 6 or 7 years ago, well into my adult years, so when I ran a sub 2 hour half, and then a 4:15 full marathon, these are huge deals to me.This book has various training schedules based on your time goals and current abilities, but also has a wealth of information as to why training and nutrition and other things matter, I highly recommend the book, as well as the Galloway method of run/walk for your training. Other people I run with were surprised to hear I was going to run a 28 mile training run, but I feel that was instrumental in teaching my body how to push on, and also it helped me learn what the figurative wall was, why it happened, and how to modify my actions and nutrition to avoid it on race day.Personally I don’t know if I want to do any more full marathons, all those miles on the concrete are pretty boring actually, but I am now adapting what I was able to learn from these books and am training for my first trail ultra (50K) in a few months, and I have full confidence in my abilities after what I’ve accomplished with the help of these books.I cannot recommend this enough!See all 96 customer reviews...
