Lily is a scandal. She hunts in breeches, gambles in a gaming hell, and hunts along side men. Her scandalous behavior, however, hides a desperate heart. When she finds out that her sister is engaged to the cold Raiford, Lily is determined to save her sister. Lily and Alex strike sparks off one another.I really liked this story of an unconventional heroine. Lily has a scandalous past, but she acknowledges her mistakes and lives with them. She is strong and independent and yet she is not cold as some similar characters might be. Alex is simply amazing. At first he disapproves of Lily. As he begins to get to know her, he recognizes her mistrust of men, her basic goodness and her hurt heart. He falls in love with her first and immediately accepts her. He doesn't want her to change. In fact, he openly acknowledges that her strength and independence is what he loves about her. He supports her and believes her. No stupid misunderstandings here. When Lily explains a compromising situation, Alex believes her. I loved their relationship. Finally, the reader is introduced to the incomparable Derek Craven, the owner of the gaming shell and Lily's friend. Derek has his own romance in DREAMING OF YOU. This book is definitely worth reading just as the introduction to Derek.I'd rate this a 4.5.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Audiobook: Loved this story and the narrationBy amtmcmSigh....Lord Raiford is almost an ideal hero. His love for Lilly is so constant. Even when she gets into scrapes or when she doubts him, he doesn't let anything change the way he feels about her.** Spoiler **I'm never happy about the hero persuading/seducing/coercing a vulnerable heroine to become his mistress. Somehow it doesn't bother me as much if the heroine is independently wealthy and I know she's on equal footing. But Lilly is in dire straights. Thankfully he proposes marriage within a day and a half, so this trope was short lived.** End Spoiler**The Audiobook is narrated by the fabulous Rosalyn Landor. I read another review complaining that the names in the audio don't match the book. I assume Ms. Landor is reading directly from a script provided by the publisher. I noticed the name changes of one character in particular, and it seemed like his title changed (and seemed incorrect since he was a third son). I wonder if this was corrected before printing the book, but the audio was already underway Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the narration and had no trouble overlooking some name changes - I still knew whom she was talking about.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Great in many ways, but fails in some huge ones.By CustomerWhat makes this British historical romance extraordinary is the unique heroine. Her antics go over the top and will have you rolling your eyes at times (such as.. jumping into the ice cold Thames under the pretense of retrieving a hat, just to make a scene) but at other times makes for a refreshing historical tale. I enjoyed the idea of a woman wearing breeches to ride a horse, cutting her hair short because she dam* well pleases, and learning to play cards and gamble because it suits her needs. Many reviewers gave this novel lower stars because theses concepts are unrealistic for a woman of the time period. Many of these antics and lifestyles would leave most women ostricized. Some of her later antics would DEFINITELY leave her an outcast from the ton.... BUT.... I'd like to argue that she was independently wealthy and very beautiful. These two things alone (sadly, this concept was the same then as it is now) goes a long way to elevate a person in society despite their errors. It is exaggerated in this novel to the nth (no one, no matter how rich and beauitful, would be above bastard children and prostitution in those times.. sorry... that was beyond real) BUT even still I was able to suspend realty to just enjoy the ride.So why the three stars Despite the fact that this is an above-average and four-star novel in many ways.... there were things that just drove me wild and seemed a little sloppy to me for a standard Kleypas novel. I liked the beginning and how Alex and Lily meet, and that her antics at the hunt remind him of his tragedy with Caroline, and thus began his intense misgivings of her... BUT why is it that Alex never shares his grief or explains his perspective with Lily She never knows why Alex dislikes her so at the beginning, though she correctly suspects it has something to do with Caroline.I disliked immensely the contrived plot points. Such as... Lily is supposedly doing everything possible to end a betrothal between her sister and Alex. But at the point that Alex brutally assults her in the library in the middle of the night (he grabs her and forces her to kiss him quite cruelly and gropes her body through a thin nightgown) she doesn't use THAT as an excuse which would have been quite reasonable. Instead she doesn't tell her family or sister about this, and allows him to throw her clothes out the window, cast her out, and so in retaliation kidnaps his brother as a way to force him to her will. I'll admit the bed scene that comes after is cute, but how we get there is illogical. There are more plot points like this but you get the idea. I don't wan to even get started with the strange "bear" scene that was so unncessary it had me pulling my hair out... (And is this the same woman at the beginning who loved the fox hunts! So what.. you would risk your life for the circus bear but you'll tolerate the brutal killing of a fox because you like to race on a horse What!)And I certainly won't comment on the behavior of our beloved Derek from "Dreaming of You" that seemed more justified to make the plot points continue than to make logical sense. There were anachronisms throughout the book that popped up that were, again, unusual for Kleypas. Such as... Lily calling Alex a "sadist"... a word that wasn't used until the late 1890's and really took root after 1900. I could be wrong, but this novel seems to take place about three decades before that. I can suspend reality with a person's personality and antics... but anachronisms take the fairy tale away pretty quick.Overall, this is a unique Victorian romance that shouldn't be missed for any Kleypas lover. BUT it's low on my list of favorites... sloppy plot points and need for editing made this one a just-average read. Not to mention that, though Lily makes for a memorable character, Alex just didn't stand out to me. I barely mentioned him in this review because... there's just not that much to mention. I wish we could have gotten to know him better.See all 195 customer reviews... To Sir Phillip With Love by Julia Quinn To Sir Phillip With Love.
