RossOther than feeling the occasional need to shake some sense into a few of the characters, I really enjoyed this book. It's full of interesting characters who are interesting and three-dimensional.There's Lena, a woman who is very good at managing the business part of her life, but who is a complete failure at managing her personal life. She chooses, and continues to choose a man who is no more than a charming, empty man-boy who manipulates her by making himself seem a scarce commodity and thus much more valuable than he really is. And this otherwise canny woman buys it every time. Then there's Kit, who wants to do the right thing and learns over time what that may actually be. She's smart and generally kind, although she doesn't have the confidence in herself that she actually merits.Then there's Cleo, who looks at the surface of things and thus does not stop and consider the consequences of her decisions and actions. And Emmet, who has a bit too much of his mum's personality. And a host of other fairly well-developed characters that inhabit two disparate worlds. Maeve Binchy is able to, in a few sentences, breathe life into even the brief supporting cast members in a book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.My First BinchyBy CustomerMy grandmother gave me this book many years ago and it was my first Maeve Binchy novel. I was charmed by the Irish setting and the rich character of the small town by the lake in the wilds of Ireland. The story has an almost mythical quality to it, set by a deep, wild lake with hermits and gypsies and fortune tellers. Binchy's writing style is cozy, friendly, and like listening to a soft, up-tempo drum beat as she moves her characters through their various predicaments. For me, she has become a go-to author for a read that is not necessarily challenging, but is entertaining and interesting. I have read most of her books over the years and have read this one many times when I need a mental distraction.Sure there are flaws. The story is far-fetched and somewhat contrived. I mean, it was the 1950's and 1960's - surely some type of ID was needed by Lena Gray to get work in England and some logistical issues should have arrived with a legally dead woman living a full and busy life in a major metropolitan area. Also, as many reviewers have pointed out, the end became incredibly rushed and was somewhat less than satisfying. Many Binchy-isms are found throughout the book. The lovable but undependable rake. The selfless and nearly perfect woman that inexplicably loves him. The fact that a haircut, a good outfit, and a secretarial course can cure most ills of society. An eerily accurate fortune teller even makes a cameo. The book is long and meanders a lot. Characters fall in love out of the blue. Character inconsistencies occur throughout the novel. Sure Louis was a selfish rascal, but he was not really presented as mean-spirited until the end. Stevie sort of changes based on what the story needs at the time.However far-fetched, the book is interesting and dramatic with lots of good characters and situations. It is a story of love, acceptance, the basic goodness of people, and the ways people work around society's conventions to do what they want no matter what.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Under it's spellBy Marilou ChapmanAs a fairly new devoted fan of Maeve Binchy's work, I have read approx. 10 books in the last 9 months, and this is one of my favorites. The Glass Lake is everything you hope for in starting a new book, mystery, pathos, families, relationships, love and death, to mention a few. I love the background descriptions of Ireland, and find myself picking up some of the words that they frequently use....Oops! The story evolves over a course of seven years, and at 858 pages, you will not believe how quickly you find yourself at that last page. I would have liked to have seen a slightly different ending, but, that is life! I had to come to grips! As for grips, I am still in shock over the loss of Maeve a couple years ago, having just realized that she is gone...but definitely, NEVER forgotten. Fortunately, I still have many books to choose from, then, I can start over!!!See all 328 customer reviews...
