(One delight of this series is that it encourages me to look up and learn more about historic places in England). While Alec is investigating these murders, his wife Daisy is attending a sports day at her stepdaughter's Quaker school in Saffron Waldon (another fascinating historic locale). Here, while sightseeing in a seventeenth-century maze, she encounters the dead body of the games master. She quickly plunges into speculations about who might have murdered him.Alec's officers are likable and a bit quirky, and the banter among them is entertaining. Daisy hangs out with mothers from her bourgeois social circle (although her antecedents are aristocratic), and their conversations are amusing. One of her friends is a high-caste Indian woman (Sakari) who has a mischievous sense of humor and loves to discuss murder cases with Daisy. Sakari is convinced that it's Daisy's Karma to bring killers to justice. Perhaps Daisy was a murder in a past life! Anyway, all these friendly relationships are interesting and add zest to the story.The there are amusing minor characters -- the bumbling local inspector who resents Alec for taking the Epping Forest murders case away from him, the taciturn old gardener of the Maze who resents having his dinner delayed by a murder, the ebullient widow who is delighted to hear that her tyrannical husband has been murdered...I always resort to this series when I want to relax with a light mystery. The horrors of that war manifested themselves in quite insidious ways. Several years after the end of the war, a serial killer is at work in Epping Forest. The best detective in the New Scotland Yard ranks, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher, is assigned to the case. His often involved wife with the "guileless blue eyes," Daisy, is busy with their daughter Belinda's sports day, so he is confident that he will not be notifying Superintendent Crane that she is "meddling" in murder (again). Alec and his trusted men, Detective Sergeant Tring and Detective Constable Piper, begin to suspect a connection to the war as the three victims were all ex-servicemen. When it is determined that they all served together, the detectives begin to close in on the killer.In the meanwhile, Daisy and her friends, Sakaria and Melanie, are attending their daughters' school sports weekend. And, once more, Daisy stumbles into a murder. The physical education teacher, Mr. Harriman, is found dead in a maze near the school, and Daisy must try to protect the teachers whom she suspects of his murder. Alec is assigned to the case of three bodies found in the woods, a common East End dumping ground. The local inspector is a dolt about being taken of the case and doesn't even bother to send a full report let alone stay and hand of the case. While Alec is off solving the case trying to connect the three victims who were killed about a year apart, Daisy and her friends go visit the girls at school for sports day. While there a nasty teacher is killed. Unfortunately, Lizzie is the one to find the body and Daisy sets out to protect the girls from the same incompetent inspector who had to give his case to Alec. Needless to say this is unpleasant for Daisy who takes his ire. Sakari is hilarious in throwing her weight around to help Daisy and being inquisitive. Despite being at Belinda's school there is little Belinda certainly not the fun of the Belinda on a train to Scotland escapade, but it is better than the nothing we have had of her lately. Belinda isn't so much helping Alec as having her own adventure for most of the book a totally different take on the usual plotSee all 30 customer reviews...
